It's the immediate future.  Unemployment and corporate
greed are facts of life across the U.S.  The notion of an elected official
telling the truth has become an anachronism, gone from the landscape like
family values and ordinary human decency.  A massive megacorporation
dominates media enterprises around the globe, and controls the US
Congress.  The Vice President is a psychotic madman who rules the nation
with an iron fist.

In
the face of nationwide outrage and disgust - including the suspicious death of
an Assistant US Attorney - the President and Vice President are re-elected by
the lowest voter turnout in the nation's history.

What's wrong with this picture?

Seven-term Congressman Victor Sligo joins high-level officials at Independence
Hall to take steps to bring down the government.  Out of nowhere comes unassuming Edwin Foulks,
a man able to see directly into the heart of every person he encounters. Foulks
flies an incendiary banner across Philadelphia "Taking over the
government. Go to Rebellion.com".  Sligo
and Foulks pull off a frantic cross-country escape from the FBI,
Homeland Security, and a cheering nation on the verge of a meltdown.  Together they conspire to accomplish Foulks'
unthinkable demand - to restore ordinary compassion to the American
landscape.

Supporting the fugitives is a redoubtable cast, including a Vietnamese
octogenarian computer geek speaking through a tracheal chip, a vigilante hacker
scarred by US government experiments on his brain, and the reincarnation of DB
Cooper.  Altogether a wild bunch who will
challenge your fictional boundaries and cause you to lock up your children and
reexamine your dust-covered copy of the Constitution.

The Foulks Rebellion eBook Malcolm Berry

The Foulks Rebellion centers around the horrible state that the US finds itself in,sometime in the near future. A third party has risen(sound familiar?) and has pretty much taken over. Corruption is rampant.Civil rights are trampled on daily.
Enter Edwin Foulks, and his disparate band of not so merry men and women. He is going to take back the government from the radical right and give it back to the American people. He has his work cut out for him. Voter apathy is as high as the rate of corruption and only nine percent of people voted in the last election.
This is a short book, compared to what I usually read, but it took me quite a while to get through it. The pace of the book is fast, it should be a page-turner.To me the pace was almost frantic, and I found my nerves jangled frequently. It was also choppy in places, leaving you wondering, what the hell just happened?
Still, it is a decent cautionary tale of what is possible if we as voters let our guard down. Conspiracy theorists should love this book.

The Foulks Rebellion eBook Malcolm Berry Reviews

Whether by direction or intuition, nearly a decade, before Malcom Berry penned his hysterical, Foulks Rebellion, high society foreign correspondent, Jane Kramer of New Yorker fame, took on a serious assignment to expose the roots of right wing radicalism in America. As an expat having spent serious time observing European culture, her trained eye was solicited by Manhattan literati to objectively describe what was really going down in the homeland. Somehow she was dispatched from the Big Apple to the funky hamlet of Van Zandt, in the northwest corner of Washington State. There, on Berry's own turf she documented, The Lone Patriot, and a curious assortment of right and left wingers inhabiting Nooksack River country.
Sadly, it was quite obvious to the provincial locals that Ms. Kramer's picture was a bit skewed to the far east. Had her compass been working properly she would have found herself under Foulks' ancient cedar on Rutsatz Road, a stoner's throw from the lone patriot's lair. Alas, though at the threshold of disestablishmentarianism, hardcore revolutionaries flew beneath Jane's radar.
Foulks, and his wacko crew redefine militancy and resistance for this blessed land of ours. Amusingly Berry strings out a yarn about technological mind control and voting machine fraud that gets redressed. Who and what brought that about? Say yes, if you know about the 1%. Is there hope for change? Go to Rebellion.com and learn! Berry's hero, Ed Foulks, hiding out by the Middle Fork of the Seyes River will take you on a roller coaster ride, well more like a jerky bus ride, or a sloppy farm truck ride, through the Pacific Northwest. Master of cyberspace, defying authority, he and his buddy, Congressman Victor Sligo, rescue America from the arch Veep who slyly manipulates the President of the United States.
Foulks Rebellion, plays out in both Washington DC as well as the pacific northwest. For PNW buffs, the Van Zandt vortex is a bit north of the locale portrayed in Tom Robbins', Another Road Side Attraction, and in the same region as Annie Dillard's mythical Tinker Creek. Politically, Berry is inspired with the same maniacal verve found in Hunter Thompson's screed, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail.
Berry takes the reader on a satirical romp that pays homage to truth and trees. Revolutionary and comic through and through see if you can find the book's one somber moment. Most of Berry's depictions of northwest life are sweet, wet, cold, humorous and accurate. At the outset, Foulks Rebellion, is rather busy. Just hold on to your seat and let the many witty twists and turns of this colorful and artfully written fantasy stretch out your breakfast.
This is a political novel about trying to oust a government of evil and dishonest men who have trampled on the rights of the citizens. The best thing I can say about the story is that it was actually quite funny in places. If this was meant to be slapstick portrayal of government gone bad and those who try to make it right, then it succeeded.

If it was meant to be a novel of warning about the direction things are moving and the need for the citizens of this country to wake up and let their voices be heard, then it wasn't so successful. The characters were mostly cartoonish, the events unbelievable. The time setting appears to be a little into the future when there are enough new gadgets that the government is able to brainwash individual citizens without their knowledge.

Those who are into conspiracy theories will be love it. Those who are at the liberal extreme will love it. There was a clear political bias by the author. I have found the truth to be somewhere in the middle and had to suspend my own beliefs to even keep reading. For example, one will come away with the belief that all big business is bad and out to destroy every one else. My own life experience is that there are plenty of bad business people and they need to be controlled, but there are also many who provide a solid structure to society. I just don't like the idea of painting every business with the same evil brush. The same standard was applied to other issues - they were all black and white, when in reality it just isn't that way.

So, if you want a good laugh with some funny characters, then you will probably enjoy this novel. If you want a serious look at the direction government is going and what needs to be done to bring some control back to the people, you might want to look elsewhere.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for writing a review.
I savored every word as it is easy to see the author chose each one carefully. I especially liked his character names, and the relevance to todays campaigns
Makcolm Berry has crafted a blazingly energetic twisting tale of political mumbo jumbo gumbo. Well written, characters with depth and personality and a quirky story that unfolds dramatically...it's all good news for the reader. Bad politicians - who doesn't love a bad politicians' tale? Countered by the actions of considerably better politicians trying to unseat a stinky government and refloat a sinking country? Stewed together with genuinely bizarre and brilliant concerned folks that lead the way. This is a story that has heart and backbone with enough grizzle to keep you chewing. I look forward to more from Malcolm Berry. He's got what it takes.
