Bewildering secrets and perplexing mysteries are probed by eight wily waifs who wander the environs of Jennings Road. Because competent adults neither planned nor presided over their outings, they had the swaggering confidence and the run of the neighborhood that was the birthright of their generation. They engaged in every manner of mischief. They took life-threatening risks. They never thought of consequences. There were no safety nets. The candid reflections in Belly Button Blues regarding siblings, friends, and adults are fanciful, funny, and sometimes wise. • Leo, handyman and moonshine distiller, dispatched outrageous and appalling newsflashes. • The gone-astray garb beneath Opal’s dress was just the beginning of her fashion blunders. • Emmett, an aged, wrecked relic, was fond of solitude, strong drink, and scratchy whiskers. • Violet divulged details about her dates and the wily ways of young men. • The mysterious Basil had joined the navy, joined the circus, or joined a religious order. • Whether it was a solitary shoe, a broken toaster, or a pan of burnt brownies, if Gram didn’t know where to put it, it got tossed into her back bedroom. • Mr. Cannon watched over the pint-sized patrons of his store as they assessed the mouth-watering merits of each lowly sweet that would set them back only one cent. • Virgie kept a loaded gun hidden beneath her apron to keep the Friday night Poker players in line. • Mark and Kenny’s wondrous creations were fantastic feats of architecture with trapdoors, windows that shuttered closed, and rooftop balconies with incredible views. • Unlike the other mothers, Winnie would bust out laughing when a child dared to act wayward, wicked, or unwise. • “Beneath them, maggots are spread out as a couch,” the sweetly smiling Sunday School teachers informed their wide-eyed students, “and worms are their coverings.” The forty-four essays in Belly Button Blues will make you wish that you had grown up with the Jennings Road gang. The world was theirs, they owned everything in it, and just about anything could be fixed with a Band-Aid and a thorough cleansing with diluted Lysol disinfectant cleaner.

Belly Button Blues eBook Teresa Lee Wendel Reviews

Great book, easy reading, funny. I really enjoyed this book. I am the same age as the writer and experienced a similar childhood. I could really relate.
Really enjoyed it!
Belly Button Blues is an interesting collection of essays about life in 1962 in western Washington state. It brought back to me life before cable TV, personal computers, the internet, cell phones, and imaginative play before the safety nannies tried to take all the risk (and fun) out of childhood. I was transported back to my own imaginative adventures as I read about poorly built rafts sailing on scum filled ponds and building diverse architectures out of old lumber and cardboard boxes. This book was a treat to digest and remember a less complicated time.
I purchased this book because I also grew up in the 50-60's era.
I was hoping for a little trip down "memory lane". I certainly was not disappointed!
Thanks to the author's colorful and delightful story telling talent,I found myself laughing out loud at the crazy
antics of childhood. From the very first essay, in which the "Jennings Road Gang" is released from
school for summer vacation to the apprehensive feelings the kids share as their season sojourn wanes,I
got to tag along. Thanks Ms. Wendel for the reflections.
I really enjoyed this book. The author really takes you back to what it was like growing up in the 50s and early 60's when you had the run of the neighborhood and every house, tree, street had some fun adventure waiting for you. Really cute. It makes great night time reading to calm the spirit before going to sleep.
I loved this sweet book. Teresa has such a wonderful way of capturing childhood adventures and makes one wish to be a kid again! Lively tales and so well written. Treat yourself, as I have - buy a hard copy as well as a kindle edition. You won't regret it.
And pour yourself a nice hot cup of tea. This book deserves to be enjoyed slowly.
Life in this family of five independent, rambunctious souls during the relatively innocent 1950's, hardly includes parents or anything resembling a delicate, refined upbringing. It presents a view of life seen and felt through the eyes and minds of children ready and eager to explore the world, however contained it may be at that age, it appears full of possibilities for this wild bunch. Genuine, fun and a soulful reminder to all--of those wonderfully blissful childhood escapades. Many thanks to the author for reminding me how much fun it really was.
