"A well-written new book." – Dallas Morning News

Winner, Best Novel of the Year – Press Women of Texas

“A fine tale of the struggle of women during World War II.” – Midwest Book Review

This historical novel by Austin–area author Sylvia Dickey Smith offers the captivating tale of Bea Meade, young mother and lady riveter, and the challenges she faces on the homefront working on the Texas/Louisiana border in a booming shipyard.

The historical novel is set in the summer of 1943 in Orange, Texas, a sleepy little town overrun with tens of thousands of new workers. With jobs galore at the wartime shipyards, the workers are rich with cash, eager for excitement, and looking for a good time.

In the midst of this, Bea Meade, mother of an infant son, finds her life shattered when her philandering husband announces he is leaving her for another woman. To make ends meet, Bea takes a job at one of the shipyards as a riveter.

Life is good for ’most everyone in Orange – except Bea, who has to fight her battles against a no-good husband, the prejudice facing women in the workplace, and the mysteries of her past that keep her awake at night.

A War of Her Own offers a story of wartime passions on the World War II homefront as Bea seeks to discover who she really is.

“Smith writes with a descriptive power that makes you feel you’re among the sights, sounds and smells of a bygone Texas.” – Galveston Daily News

A War of Her Own eBook Sylvia Dickey Smith Reviews

I seldom write reviews, but I would have appreciated it if some other reviewers had mentioned the foul language and situation which occurs just after the story starts. As I'm unable to get samples of kindle books on my ipad, I wasn't aware of the content until purchasing and downloading this. I couldn't make it past page 4. Obviously, I can't judge the rest of the book, as it was just too gross, I don't know, maybe it's as good as the other reviews say, but not worth it for me.

I won't include any spoilers, but if you are disgusted by outhouse language (literally), I'd pass this one by. I won't even go into the even more offensive situation at the beginning, but it was enough for me to ask for a refund, which I have never done. , please; if I'd been able to sample this, there wouldn't be a need for either the refund or this review.
A War of Her Own by Sylvia Dickey Smith is a novel set during World War II in the summer of 1943 in Orange, Texas. My father was one of the workers at the wartime shipyard and we still live in Orange. I Couldn't put this book down it brought back a lot of memory. This is a great book.
Just finished the book and, wow, what a story! I loved the way Bea, with her new toughness, took charge at the end.

I enjoyed the memories of WW II Orange. I was there at the time and Sylvia Dickey Smith got not just the facts right, but the spirit as well.

A word about Percy Never in any book, stage show, picture show, or narrative from the next bar stool has any infant in a story became just as alive for me as the rest of the cast.

Looking for an interesting and well written bool this is the one for you. I enjoyed the writers point of view.
I bought this for my 9 year old granddaughter (who reads @ a 9th grade level), and she loved it! She found a new hero in the pages of this wonderful book.
This is history wrapped in fiction. Bea Meade reminds me of the world discussed and lived by my aunts or mother who lived, as adult women, through WWII. The courage so many women had to show in the face of what was still a "man's world" is clearly depicted here, and, in a fiction novel, we experience the truth behind the "Rosie the Riveter" story. A terrific novel, highly recommended.
A love story set in the hustle-buslle of the shipyards during the frenzied home front of World War II. The author brings home the attitudes and the flavor of the times in her story about the people of Orange, Texas, as they live and love during the biggest thing that happened there. It shows how the War affected people and how it changed their lives.
Fiction, but still good story.
